Does your toddler love do a dot art? It’s a fantastic way to help their fine motor skills and keeps them busy. But the dot markers are expensive! Save yourself some money and make your own DIY bingo daubers instead. It only takes a few minutes. And you can put your empty hand sanitiser bottles to good use!
I recently created a fall do a dot printable for my toddler. It wasn’t until I started to set up the activity that I realised I only had a red coloured bingo dauber. So I used what I had around the house to make my own.
It worked so well, I thought I’d share how to make one. It only takes a few minutes. You’ll never need to buy expensive dab and dot markers again!
What You Will Need to Make the DIY Bingo Daubers
Here are the 5 things you need:
- A small bottle – Try to find a small one with a lid so you can reuse the markers again. A small hand sanitizer bottle or food colouring bottle works best.
- Paint – different colours. Washable is ideal
- Sponge – Any sponge you can find that you don’t mind cutting up
- Glue Gun
How to Make DIY Bingo Daubers
Here are the simple steps you need to follow to make the markers.
1. Prepare the Bottle
Wash the bottle out and remove the label. Make sure the bottle is fully dry before continuing to the next step
Tip: get rid of the sticky residue left on the front of the bottle by using nail polish remover and a cotton wool ball.
2. Draw Around the Bottle On the Sponge
Turn the bottle over and draw around it on the sponge.
Cut out the circle. Then put it into the top of the bottle to check it fits. If not, trim it a little.
3. Fill the Bottle
Fill ⅔ of the bottle with paint. Make sure you leave enough space at the top.
4. Glue the Sponge in Place
Grab your glue gun and glue around the inner edge of the bottle. Place the sponge inside.
Tip: Make sure some of the sponge is poking out of the bottle. It’ll be harder to paint with if it’s all the way in the bottle.
5. Squeeze the Paint Into the Sponge
Turn the bottle upside down and squeeze a little so that paint comes through the sponge.
6. Paint With the DIY Bingo Daubers!
Let your kids paint with the DIY dab and dot marker. Squeeze gently every now and then to get more paint on the sponge.
These brilliant homemade bingo markers are reusable. Simply add the lid on and save them for next time.
Want a different colour? Remove the sponge, empty the bottle and wash it out. Refill with different coloured paint and add a new sponge.
